Black Consciousness Movement (kurz BCM, deutsch: „Schwarzes-Bewusstsein-Bewegung“) war eine Bewegung von schwarzen Südafrikanern.
Geschichte
In den 1960er-Jahren gab es in Südafrika mehrere Gruppen, die in Opposition zum herrschenden Apartheidssystem standen. Eine dieser Gruppen war die Black-Consciousness-Bewegung. Als ihr Begründer gilt der Studentenführer Steve Biko. Sie war stark geprägt von der Black-Power-Bewegung der Schwarzen in den USA.
Grundlage der Bewegung war ein gestiegenes Selbstbewusstsein der Schwarzen gegenüber der weißen herrschenden Minderheit. Mit der Black-Consciousness-Bewegung besannen sich die Schwarzen verstärkt auf ihre eigenen Werte.
Mit dem gewaltsamen Tod Steve Bikos 1977 in der Haft war die Black-Consciousness-Bewegung als Bewegung kaum noch aktiv, ihre Ideen trugen aber letztlich zum Ende der Apartheid bei.
Die Azanian People’s Organisation (AZAPO) ist eine Partei, die sich auf die Leitlinien der BCM beruft. Sie erhielt bei den südafrikanischen Parlamentswahlen 2009 einen Sitz.
