Blackwood (Wales)

Blackwood (wal. Coed Dduon) ist eine Stadt im südlichen Wales. Sie hat etwa 23.000 Einwohner. Die Stadt war bis zur Schließung der letzten Mine 1990 ein wichtiges Zentrum des britischen Bergbaus. Im Laufe der Zeit ist sie geographisch weitgehend mit den Nachbarorten Pontllanfraith, Cefn Fforest und Ynysddu verschmolzen.

Der Philantophist John Moggeridge plante die Stadt um 1820 als sozialreformerische Mustersiedlung ähnlich den Plänen eines Robert Owen. Am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts war Blackwood ein wichtiges Zentrum der Chartisten-Bewegung.

Bekannt wurde die Stadt vor allem als Heimat der Rockband Manic Street Preachers und des walisischen Dichters Islwyn.
