Burking

Burking ist ein rechtsmedizinischer Begriff, der eine spezielle Form des Tötens durch Ersticken beschreibt. Der Begriff geht auf William Burke, einen Serienmörder in Edinburgh Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts, zurück. Dieser pflegte einem Opfer Augen, Mund und Nase zuzuhalten, während er rittlings auf seinem Brustkorb saß. Der Tod tritt bei diesem Vorgehen durch Asphyxie ein. Dabei kommt es zu relativ geringen Zeichen eines gewaltsamen Todes. Burke war es besonders daran gelegen, da er die Leichen an anatomische Institute verkaufte.

Trivia: Burkes Geschichte wurde von John Landis 2010 in einem Spielfilm mit dem Titel Burke & Hare aufgegriffen.

Der US-Schriftsteller James Patterson beschreibt in seinem Kriminalroman Die 5. Plage aus der Lindsay-Boxer-Reihe u.a. ein Mörderduo, das seine Opfer durch Burking umbringt, um die Hinweise auf einen gewaltsamen Tod zu vertuschen.
