Unter einem All-in-one-Computer versteht man einen Computer, bei dem Hauptplatine und Monitorteil in einem gemeinsamen Gehäuse untergebracht sind. Außerdem wird der Begriff auf Desktop-Computer eingeschränkt, da er auf alle mobilen Geräte wie Notebooks und ähnliche trivialerweise immer zutrifft.

Ein wichtiger Vorteil dieser Bauweise ist, dass ein großer Teil der fehlerträchtigen und auch unansehnlichen Verkabelung entfällt (und so auch der WAF erhöht wird).

Die ersten wirklich brauchbaren Geräte dieser Kategorie wurden zu ihrer Zeit (Ende der 1970er Jahre) noch gar nicht so genannt. Es waren die frühen Modelle von Commodore wie der PET 2001 und die nachfolgende CBM-Serie. Sie hatten auch noch die Tastatur fest ins Gehäuse integriert (bis auf die letzten Modelle der Serie). Diese Bauweise wurde aber von keinem wichtigen Konkurrenten übernommen, und bald legte man mehr Wert auf die Flexibilität eines modularen Aufbaus aus separaten Geräten, und so verschwanden solche Geräte Anfang der 1980er Jahre wieder vom Markt.

Im Jahr 1998 war es dann die Firma Apple, die mit dem Apple iMac ein Gerät in dieser Bauweise herausbrachte und damit auf Anhieb erfolgreich war, so dass diese Modellreihe bis heute (2011) fortgeführt wird.

Diesmal haben sich aber einige weitere Hersteller gefunden, die dieses erfolgreiche Prinzip auf x86-PCs übertrugen und vergleichbare Modelle herausbrachten. Hierbei spricht man von einem All-in-one-PC.

Aktuell (2011) finden Fernsehgeräte mit Internet-Fähigkeit immer mehr Verbreitung, es geht in die Richtung von vollständig funktionsfähigen PCs, die auch in der All-in-one-Bauform kommen.
