Viscount Gage, of Castle Island in the County of Kerry of the Kingdom of Ireland, ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel in der Peerage of Ireland, der von der Familie Gage geführt wird.

Stammsitz der Familie ist Firle Place in Firle, East Sussex.

Verleihung

Der Titel wurde im Jahre 1720 für Sir Thomas Gage, 8. Baronet, geschaffen. Dieser war ein wichtiger Unterstützer der Briten im Rahmen der Befriedung Irlands. In der Folgezeit war er über viele Jahre Mitglied des House of Commons, da der irische Titel nicht automatisch mit einem Sitz im House of Lords verbunden war.

Nachgeordnete Titel

Gleichzeitig mit der Viscountcy wurde der Titel eines Baron Gage, of Castlebar in the County of Mayo, verliehen, der ebenfalls zur Peerage of Ireland gehört.

Der zweite Viscount war ein bedeutender Truppenbefehlshaber. Er wurde 1790 zum Baron Gage of Highmeadow erhoben. Dieser Titel, der zur Peerage of Great Britain gehört, war mit einem besonderen Vermerk versehen, dass er auch auf Brüder des ersten Titelträgers und ersatzweise auch auf andere männliche Abkömmlinge des Großvaters väterlicherseits übergehen könne, weil der Viscount keine Söhne hatte. Beide Baronien werden heute als nachgeordnete Titel der Viscountcy geführt.

Weitere Titel

Der vorgenannte zweite Viscount war 1780 bereits zum Baron Gage in der Peerage of Great Britain erhobern worden. Dieser Titel, der keine besondere Nachfolgeklausel aufwies, erlosch mit seinem Tode 1791.

Ein Vorfahr des ersten Viscounts war bereits 1622 zum Baronet, of Firle Place, ernannt worden. Diese Würde gehört zur Baronetage of England.
