Castle Rising ist eine Burgruine in dem Dorf Castle Rising in der Grafschaft Norfolk.

Geschichte

Die Burg wurde 1138 von William d’Aubigny, 1. Earl of Arundel erbaut. Von 1330 bis zu ihrem Tod 1358 war Castle Rising Residenz der durch ihren Sohn, Eduard III., vom königlichen Hof verbannten Isabelle de France. 1544 ging Castle Rising bis heute andauernd in den Besitz der Familie Howard über. Momentaner Eigentümer ist Greville Howard, Baron Howard of Rising.

Architektur

Der Hauptturm (Keep) ist gut erhalten. Er ist breit gebaut und nur zwei Stockwerke hoch, und damit ein gutes Beispiel für ein sogenanntes hall-keep, im Unterschied zum tower keep. Aufgrund dieser Bauform waren sowohl die Küche als auch die Repräsentationsräume (große Halle) im Keep selbst enthalten.
