DIYbio

DIYbio (von Do It Yourself) ist eine zunächst in Cambridge (Massachusetts) gegründete Organisation für Amateur-Biologen, die mehr als 1600 Mitglieder in den Vereinigten Staaten und weltweit hat. Es gibt Treffen in ganz Nordamerika, Großbritannien, Frankreich und Dänemark. Ziel ist es, das Gebiet der Biologie zu „demokratisieren“ und Laien einen leichteren Zugang zu wissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen zu ermöglichen. [1][2] Die Initiative arbeitet mit Konzepten der Synthetischen Biologie.[3] Die Laien-Forscher organisieren u.a. Projekte auf der Suche nach Biotreibstoffen und Impfstoffen oder zum Nachweis von Melamin. [4] Häufig werden dabei die Versuche dieser sog. Bio-Hacker in Privaträumen (z.B. Küchen, Garagen)[5] mit unzureichender biotechnischer Sicherheit durchgeführt.[6] In der Diskussion steht deshalb die Entwicklung einer Hackerethik.
