Carboxyl-Terminus eines Peptids, blau markiert

Als Carboxyl-Terminus, kurz C-Terminus, wird jenes Ende eines Proteins oder Polypeptids bezeichnet, welches eine Aminosäure mit einer freien Carboxylgruppe (COOH) besitzt.

Mit dem C-Terminus endet die Proteinbiosynthese am Ribosom. Damit hat das Protein einen unterscheidbaren Anfang und ein Ende: Durch die Peptidbindung, bei der immer eine Carboxylgruppe mit einer Aminogruppe verknüpft wird, bleibt am Anfang eine Aminogruppe und am Ende eine Carboxylgruppe frei.
