Die HMS New Zealand war ein Schlachtkreuzer der Royal Navy, der im Ersten Weltkrieg eingesetzt wurde.

Technik

Die New Zealand war ein Schlachtkreuzer der Indefatigable-Klasse. Von den 4 Türmen der schweren Artillerie waren je ein Turm vorn und achtern und 2 als diagonal versetzte Flügeltürme aufgestellt. Im Gegensatz zur Invincible-Klasse konnten beide Seitentürme in einem beschränkten Bereich nach der jeweils gegenüberliegenden Seite feuern.

Geschichte

1908 entschloss sich das britische Dominion Neuseeland, zur Verteidigung des Commonwealth den Bau eines Schlachtkreuzers zu finanzieren. Da Neuseeland zu dieser Zeit noch keine eigene Marine unterhielt, unterstellte es das Schiff der Royal Navy, so dass die New Zealand seit der Indienststellung 1912 der britischen Home Fleet angehörte. Während des Ersten Weltkriegs nahm sie am Ersten Seegefecht bei Helgoland und am Gefecht auf der Doggerbank teil, ebenso wie an der Skagerrakschlacht und am Zweiten Seegefecht bei Helgoland.

Von Februar 1919 bis Februar 1920 unternahm sie eine Weltreise mit Admiral John Jellicoe an Bord.

Gemäß den Vereinbarungen der Washingtoner Flottenkonferenz wurde sie 1920 außer Dienst gestellt und ab Dezember 1922 abgewrackt.
