Die MTV Video Music Awards 1984 wurden live am 14. September 1984 ausgestrahlt, die Musikvideos konnten vom 2. Mai 1983 bis 2. Mai 1984 gewählt werden. Moderiert wurde die Liveshow von Dan Aykroyd und Bette Midler. Die Preisverleihung fand in der Radio City Music Hall in New York City statt.
Der Größte Gewinner war Herbie Hancock mit fünf Awards, gefolgt von Michael Jackson (drei Awards). Die Auszeichnung für das Video des Jahres ging aber an The Cars für "You Might Think," und war somit der erste Gewinner des Awards.
Unter den Nominierten für das Video des Jahres waren auch Hancocks "Rockit" und The Police "Every Breath You Take" mit jeweils acht Nominierungen pro Stück erhielten. Schließlich der meist nominierte Künstler von 1984 war Cyndi Lauper, die abgesehen vom gewinnen des Best Female Video-Awards sechs mal für "Girls Just Want to Have Fun "und drei mal für" Time After Time nominiert war."
