Madam C. J. Walker (geb. Sarah Breedlove; * 23. Dezember 1867 in Delta, Louisiana; † 25. Mai 1919 in Irvington, New York, USA) war eine amerikanische Kosmetikunternehmerin.

Biografie

Walker wuchs in sehr einfachen Verhältnissen im Süden der Vereinigten Staaten auf. Sie erfand und entwickelte ein Haarpflegemittel, welches mit der Zeit reißenden Absatz fand. Dies war die Basis ihres späteren Kosmetikunternehmens. 1906 heiratete sie Charles Joseph Walker, worauf sie den Namen ihres Ehemannes annahm und deshalb Madam C. J. Walker genannt wurde.

Madam C. J. Walker wurde die erste Millionärin im Lande, die sich ihr eigenes Vermögen erarbeitet hatte. Als Frau und noch dazu als Afro-Amerikanerin baute sie sich für die damalige Zeit vollkommen ungewöhnlich ein eigenes elegantes Anwesen am Hudson River, in Nachbarschaft zu den Vanderbilts und Rockefeller. Zu Gast war Enrico Caruso, der der Villa den italienisch-klingenden Namen Villa Lewaro gab.

Madam Walker verstarb in ihrer Villa und wurde im Woodlawn Cemetery in der Bronx bestattet. Ihr gesamtes Vermögen vermachte sie ihrer einzigen Tochter A'Lelia Walker. 1998 wurde ihr vom United States Postal Service eine Briefmarke gewidmet.
