Morant Bay ist eine Stadt an der Südost-Küste Jamaikas. Sie befindet sich an der Mündung des gleichnamigen Flusses[1]. Sie liegt im County Surrey und ist die Hauptstadt des Parish Saint Thomas. 2010 betrug die Einwohnerzahl 11.121 Menschen[2].

Geschichte

Morant Bay zählt zu den geschichtsträchtigsten Orten auf Jamaika[3]. Am 1. Oktober 1865 begann in dem Ort die gleichnamige Morant Bay Rebellion[3]. Dieser von Paul Bogle angeführte Bauernaufstand markierte einen Wendepunkt in der Geschichte der Insel. Die Rebellion wurde brutal unterdrückt[3]. Sie hatte aber zur Folge, dass die Verfassung der Insel geändert wurde und war Grund einer kontroversen politischen Debatte in Großbritannien. Während der Niederschlagung des Aufstands kamen fast 500 Menschen ums Leben und der größte Teil der Stadt wurden zerstört[1][3]. Zum Jahrestag finden jedes Jahr Veranstaltungen in Morant Bay und im benachbarten Bergdorf Stony Gut statt.

Historische Bauwerke

Das Gerichtsgebäude von Morant Bay mit dem Namen Morant Bay Cort House, aus dem 18. Jahrhundert war ein wichtiger Ort des Geschehens während der Morant-Bay-Rebellion[4]. Das Gebäude wurde während eines Brandes 2007 zerstört[4].

Unweit des Gerichtes steht ein steinernes Fort aus dem Jahr 1758[5].
