Nhamatanda

Nhamatanda, früher Vila Machado, englisch Bambu Creek, ist eine mosambikanische Stadt in der Provinz Sofala 92 Kilometer[1] nordwestlich der Provinzhauptstadt und zweitgrößten Stadt des Landes Beira.

Nhamatanda ist Distrikthauptstadt, hat gut 20.000 Einwohner und liegt an der Bahnstrecke Beira–Harare, Simbabwe. Die Gründung erfolgte 1898 als Nova Fontesvila durch Portugiesen nach einem Marquis Fontes Pereira de Melo. In den 1920er-Jahren wurde die Stadt in Vila Machado[2] umbenannt, nach dem Gouverneur Mosambiks von 1890 bis 1925 Joaquim José Machado, und 1975, nach der Unabhängigkeit Mosambiks, erhielt sie ihren gegenwärtigen Namen nach einem nahegelegenen gleichnamigen Fluss. Die Sprache der Einheimischen ist vorwiegend Chisena.
