Der Deckname Operation Pike bezieht sich auf eine geplante strategische Bombardierung sowjetischer Ölfelder durch Englisch-französische Truppen unter dem Kommando von Air Commodore John Slessor.[1] Die militärische Planung der Briten für dieses Unternehmen erfolgte während der ersten zwei Jahre des Zweiten Weltkriegs als die formell neutrale Sowjetunion durch den Hitler-Stalin-Pakt mehr zu einem Verbündeten Hitlers wurde, zumindest in rüstungs- bzw. rohstoffwirtschaftlicher Hinsicht. Die geplanten Luftangriffe hatten das strategische Ziel, die sowjetische Öl-Industrie mit Schwerpunkt Baku zu zerstören, um einen möglichen Zusammenbruch der sowjetischen Wirtschaft zu verursachen und damit Deutschland den Zugriff auf die sowjetischen Ressourcen zu verweigern.[2]
