Religious Order of the Sisters of Mercy

Der Religious Order of the Sisters of Mercy (RSM) (deutsch: religiöser Orden der Schwestern der Barmherzigkeit) ist ein katholischer Frauenorden, der im Jahre 1831 von Catherine McAuley in Dublin, Irland gegründet wurde. Der Orden hatte 2003 weltweit ungefähr 10.000 Mitglieder und ist in verschiedenen Kongregationen organisiert.

Missbrauch in Irland

Der Orden machte 2009 Schlagzeilen durch Berichte von seelischem, körperlichem und sexuellem Missbrauch sowie der Ausbeutung von Kindern in irischen Heimen und Schulen (Industrial schools). Nach Veröffentlichung des Ryan-Berichts kündigten die Sisters of Mercy an, den Opfern des Missbrauchs eine Entschädigung von insgesamt 128 Millionen Euro bezahlen zu wollen.[1][2]
