Skein (englisch für „Strang“) bezeichnet eine Familie von kryptographischen Hashfunktionen. Skein ist ein Kandidat im Wettbewerb für den zukünftigen Standard SHA-3. Er wurde im Dezember 2010 in die Runde der Finalisten aufgenommen.

Skein wurde von Niels Ferguson, Stefan Lucks, Bruce Schneier, Doug Whiting, Mihir Bellare, Tadayoshi Kohno, Jon Callas und Jesse Walker entwickelt.

Der Aufbau des Algorithmus’ basiert auf der Blockverschlüsselung Threefish. Der Algorithmus besteht aus 72 Runden mit einer Blockgröße von 256 oder alternativ 512 Bit. Bei einer Blockgröße 1024 Bit kommen 80 Runden zu Anwendung. Der Rechenaufwand beträgt 6,1 Zyklen pro Byte auf einem Core 2 Prozessor.[1]

Schwächen

Auf der zweiten SHA-3-Konferenz zeigten Dmitry Khovratovich, Ivica Nikolié und Christian Rechberger eine mögliche Schwäche[2] in Skein. Daraufhin passten die Autoren den Algorithmus geringfügig an.[3]
