Der Tempel Somnath (Gujarati:સોમનાથ મંદિર) nahe Veraval in Saurashtra, an der Westküste von Gujarat, Indien, gilt als der heiligste der zwölf Jyotirlinga-Schreine des Gottes Shiva. Somnath heißt: „Schützer des Mondgottes“. Der Tempel wurde sechs Mal zerstört und ebenso oft wieder errichtet, zuletzt 1950 bis 1953 nach Erlangung der indischen Unabhängigkeit.[1][2]

Geschichte

Der erste Tempel von Somnath soll aus der Zeit vor Christi Geburt stammen.[3] Der zweite, errichtet von der Yadava-Dynastie von Vallabhi, ersetzte ihn um 649.[3] 725 ließ ihn Junayad, der arabische Gouverneur von Sindh zerstören. König Nagabhata II von Gujarat ließ den dritten Tempel 815 errichten.

Eine weitere Zerstörung erfolgte 1024 durch Mahmud von Ghazni, der dafür in der islamischen Welt viel Lob erntete[4][3] Ein neuerlicher Wiederaufbau erfolgte 1026–1042, gefolgt von der neuerlichen Zerstörung 1296 durch die Armee von Sultan Allauddin Khilji.[3][4]

Mahipala Deva, König von Saurashtra ließ das Heigtum 1308 wieder aufbauen, Muzaffar Shah I, Sultan von Gujarat ließ es 1375 wieder zerstören.[3] Weitere Zerstörungen erfolgten 1451 und 1701, letztere durch den Moghulkaiser Aurangzeb.[3] Aurangzeb ließ an seiner Stelle unter Verwendung von Material aus dem Tempel eine Moschee errichten. Königin Ahilyabai Holkar von Indore ließ 1783 neben dieser Moschee einen neuen Tempel errichten.[3]

Nach Erlangung der Unabhängigkeit kam es ab 1950 zum Wiederaufbau des Heiligtums. Die Moschee wurde um einige Kilometer versetzt.[5] Premierminister Jawaharlal Nehru missbilligte diese Aktion eines hinduistischen Aktivismus.
