South East Island (Moriori und Māori: Rangatira, dt. „Südostinsel“)[1] ist eine unbewohnte Insel im Archipel der zu Neuseeland gehörenden Chatham-Inseln im südwestlichen Pazifischen Ozean.

Geographie

South East Island liegt, wie der Name vermuten lässt, im Südosten der Chatham-Inseln, rund 2 km südöstlich von Pitt Island sowie etwa 55 km südöstlich von Waitangi auf der Hauptinsel Chatham Island. Die 2,5 km lange und bis zu 1,5 km breite Insel hat eine Fläche von 2,18 km², was sie zur drittgrößten Insel des Archipels macht. Die Insel weist teils steile Küstenkliffs auf und erreicht eine Höhe von 224 m über dem Meer.

Fauna

Auf South East Island kommen zahlreiche seltene oder endemische Tier- und Pflanzenarten vor, darunter der von Aussterben bedrohte Chatham-Schnäpper (Petroica traversi).[2] Die Insel ist auch ein bedeutendes Brutgebiet für Seevögel, wie beispielsweise des seltenen Chatham-Sturmvogels (Pterodroma axillaris) oder des Dunklen Sturmtauchers (Puffinus griseus). An der Südküste lebt eine Kolonie Neuseeländische Seebären (Arctocephalus forsteri). Bis in die 1960er Jahre wurde die Insel auch als Weideland für Rinder und Schafe genutzt. Seit die letzten Haustiere die Insel verlassen haben und South East Island zu einem Naturschutzgebiet erhoben wurde, erholen sich die Pflanzenbestände der einst überweideten Insel wieder und die für die subantarktischen Inseln Neuseelands typischen Megaherb-Gesellschaften breiten sich wieder aus.
