Thomas R. Holtz Jr.

Thomas Richard Holtz Jr. (* 1965 in Los Angeles) ist ein US-amerikanischer Wirbeltier-Paläontologe, spezialisiert auf Raubsaurier und bei diesen speziell auf Tyrannosaurier.

Holtz wuchs bei Houston auf, studierte Geowissenschaften an der Johns Hopkins University (Bachelor 1987) und wurde 1992 an der Yale University promoviert (An unusual structure of the metatarsus of Theropoda (Archosauria, Dinosauria, Saurischia) of the Cretaceous). Er ist Senior Lecturer an der University of Maryland in College Park. Er ist Verfasser oder Mitverfasser mehrerer Bücher über Dinosaurier.

Er befasst sich mit der Taxonomie von Theropoden (wobei er sich der Methode der Kladistik bedient) und führte neue Klassifikationsvorschläge ein. 1995 führte er Maniraptoriformes als Gruppe von Coelurosauriern ein, die die Dinosaurier-Vorfahren moderner Vögel umfasst (Maniraptora) und die Ornithomimosauria enthält. Er sprach sich auch 1994 für eine Gruppe der Arctometatarsalia ein mit der Gruppe der Bullatosauria (Ornithomimosauria und Troodontidae) und den Tyrannosauriden. Diese letztere Einteilung wurde aber später widerlegt und auch von Holtz wieder verworfen. Er befasste sich auch mit Jagdverhalten und Bewegung von Raubsauriern.

Holtz befasst sich auch mit Auswirkungen der Plattentektonik auf die Verteilung der Dinosaurier.

Holtz war auch an der heute üblichen Einordnung der Tyrannosaurier bei den Coelurosauriern statt den Carnosauriern beteiligt.

Er betreut die Tyrannosaurier im Tree of Life Web Project.^[1] Holtz war Berater der BBC Serie Walking with Dinosaurs.
