DEC-Bit

Das DEC-Bit ist ein Mechanismus, der im RFC 1254 zur Überlastkontrolle im IP-Netzwerkverkehr vorgeschlagen wird. Es wurde ursprünglich von der Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) für das DECnet-Protokoll entwickelt. Ist das Netzwerk in absehbarer Zeit soweit überlastet, dass es Datenpakete verwerfen müsste, wird ein Bit in den Paketen (das DEC-Bit) von den Routern gesetzt. Dieses DEC-Bit wird vom Empfänger dann an den Sender zurückgeschickt, worauf dieser seine Senderate verkleinern sollte, um Paketverlust im Netzwerk zu vermeiden.
