Defence for Children International (DCI) ist eine unabhängige NGO, die im internationalen Jahr des Kindes (1979) gegründet wurde. Sie hat das Ziel praktisches, systematisches und konzertiertes Handeln für Kinderrechte, die in der Kinderrechtskonvention stehen. Das internationale Sekretariat befindet sich in Genf in der Schweiz. DCI hat 48 Sektionen und angeschlossene Mitglieder und eine Vertretung beim Hauptquartier der Vereinten Nationen in New York. DCI ist auf globaler, regionaler, nationaler und lokaler Ebene tätig. Auf globaler Ebene fokussiert sie sie sich auf Lobbyismus, Eintreten für Kinderrechte und Monitoring der Umsetzung der Kinderrechtskonvention durch die Staaten. Die Sektionen arbeiten zu verschiedenen Kinderrechtsthemen. Die Hauptthemen sind Kinderarbeit, Jugendjustiz, Kinderprostitution, Kinder im bewaffneten Konflikt und Kinderrechtsbildung.
Wie andere Menschenrechtsorganisationen gehört sie zur Koalition für die Beendigung des Einsatzes von Kindersoldaten und dem Child Rights Information Network. DCI hat einen beratenden Status beim Wirtschafts- und Sozialrat der Vereinten Nationen, Unicef, UNESCO und dem Europarat.
