Earl of Airlie ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel in der Peerage of Scotland, der von der Familie Ogilvy getragen wird.

Stammsitze der Familie sind Airlie Castle und Cortachy Castle bei Forfar, Angus in Schottland.

Verleihung

Der Titel wurde im Jahre 1639 James Ogilvy, 7. Lord Ogilvy of Airlie, verliehen. Dieser war einer der Heerführer des englischen Königs in den Bischofskriegen.

Nachgeordneter Titel

Der Earl of Airlie führt den nachgeordneten Titel Lord Ogilvy of Airlie, der 1491 verliehen wurde, als James Ogilvy zum Lord of Parliament erhoben wurde. Er gehört ebenfalls zur Peerage of Scotland.

Der jeweilige Titelerbe führt den Höflichkeitstitel Lord Ogilvy.

Entzug des Titels

Der dritte Earl beteiligte sich am Aufstand von 1715, woraufhin ihm der Titel aberkannt wurde. Dies setzte sich fort, als der Sohn des vierten Earls am Aufstand von 1745 teilnahm. Erst 1826 erfolgte die rückwirkende Aufhebung des Entziehung durch Parlamentsgesetz.

Trivia

Sir Angus Ogilvy, der Ehemann von Prinzessin Alexandra, einer Enkelin von König Georg V., war ein Sohn des zwölften Earls.
