Bei der Emergency Service Unit handelt es sich um eine Notfalleinheit des New York Police Department (NYPD), welche bei Autounfällen, Gebäudeeinstürzen, Geiselnahmen und ähnlichen Situationen eingesetzt wird, in denen Spezialgerät oder aber spezielles Fachwissen gefragt sind. Die ESU umfasst zahlreiche Unterabteilungen wie etwa eine Diensthundestaffel (Canine (K9) Unit), Polizeitaucher, Notarztteams, Sprengstoffexperten und einen Bereich Ausbildung, der Beamte hinsichtlich Waffen und Taktik schult.

Aufgaben

Während die K9-Unit mit ausgebildeten Diensthunden bei der Suche nach vermissten Personen, flüchtigen Straftätern oder versteckten Drogen Unterstützung bietet, stellt der taktische Teil des ESU das Pendant zu den SWAT-Einheiten anderer Bundesstaaten dar. In dieser Einheit finden sich denn auch die bestausgebildeten Beamten der New Yorker Polizei.
