Etheldreda

Sankt Audrey, auch Æthelthryth, Ætheldreda, Æðelþryð, Ethelreda oder Etheldreda (* 636; † 23. Juni 679 in Ely) war eine angelsächsische Heilige. Sie war Tochter des ostanglischen Königs Anna und somit auch Prinzessin. Ihre Schwestern Sexburga, Ethelburga und Withburga sind ebenfalls Heilige. Sie hatte einen Bruder Eormin und eine Halbschwester Saethryth welche sie ins Nonnenleben begleitete.

Leben

Sie wurde 651/652 mit Tondberct/Tondberht verheiratet, hielt aber ihr Keuschheitsgelübde auch bis zu seinem Tod in 655. Von Tondberct erhielt sie Isle of Ely als Geschenk. In zweiter Ehe wurde sie 660/664 mit Ecgfrith, dem König von Northumbria verheiratet. Als dieser 670 an die Macht kam, wurde sie zur Königin. Zwei Jahre später wurde sie jedoch Nonne in der Priorei Coldingham. 673 gründete sie die Abtei Ely mit sich selbst als Äbtin. Im darauffolgenden Jahr übergibt sie Ländereien an den Bischof von York Wilfrid, damit dieser die neue Abtei Hexham gründen kann.
