Der FC Sheffield, (offiziell: Sheffield Football Club) wurde am 24. Oktober 1857 in Sheffield, England, gegründet, und ist damit der älteste heute noch existierende Fußballverein der Welt.

Gründer des Clubs waren ein Rechtsanwalt und Direktor einer Firma für die Herstellung von Silberplatten sowie ein Weinhändler. Ihnen ging es vor allem um die Etablierung eines regelmäßigen Spielbetriebs und die Vereinheitlichung der Regeln. Ihre Sheffield Rules waren das erste moderne Fußballregelwerk.

Weil der Verein auf seinen Status als Amateurverein Wert legte, wurde er schon zum Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts von den populäreren Proficlubs Sheffield United und Sheffield Wednesday überholt und spielt heute in der Northern Premier League Division One South, der vierthöchsten Amateurliga Englands, gleichbedeutend mit der 8. Leistungsstufe des englischen Ligasystems.

Der Verein ist neben Real Madrid der einzige, der den FIFA Order of Merit erhalten hat, die höchste von der FIFA verliehene Auszeichnung für Individuen sowie Clubs. Dies geschah anlässlich der Hundertjahrfeier der FIFA 2004, bei der Real Madrid als erfolgreichster Club und der FC Sheffield als ältester Club geehrt wurden.
