Farfalle sind italienische Nudeln in Schmetterlingsform. (Der Plural Farfalle bezeichnet die Nudelart, eine einzelne Nudel heißt Farfalla. Das Wort stammt aus dem Italienischen, wo es auch Schmetterling(e) bedeutet.)

Mit Sepia gefärbte Farfalla

Ihr Aussehen leitet sich von einem rechteckigen Stück Pastateig ab, das in der Mitte zusammengedrückt wird. Dabei wölbt sich die Pasta in der Mitte und wird etwas dicker. Die Enden bleiben dabei jedoch dünn und ahmen so Schmetterlingsflügel nach.

Ursprünglich entwickelte sich diese Pastasorte in der antiken Stadt Emilia.

Varianten der Farfalle sind: Farfalle Tonde (seitlich rund), Farfalle Tricolori (dreifarbig), Farfalline (klein), Farfalloni (groß), Fiocchi Rigati (ohne Zacken).

Die Nudelsorte gab einer speziellen Form einer Feuerwerksbombe ihren Namen, da diese entsprechend der Namensgebung am Himmel erleuchtet.
