Der Fluginformationsdienst, kurz FIS genannt, gibt den Führern von Luftfahrzeugen Informationen und Hinweise, die für die sichere, geordnete und flüssige Durchführung von Flügen erforderlich sind sowie im Rahmen des Fluginformationsdienstes Such- und Rettungsdienststellen zu unterstützen.
Folgende Aufgaben werden vom Fluginformationsdienst ausgeübt:
- Verbreitung allgemeiner Informationen als Flugrundfunksendungen
- Verbreitung gezielter Informationen im Einzelfall
- Entgegennahme und Verbreitung von Verkehrsinformationen
- Entgegennahme und Verbreitung von Meldungen
Der Leistungsumfang des Fluginformationsdienstes ist vom Arbeitsanfall, sowie von den am Arbeitsplatz verfügbaren technischen Einrichtungen und deren Möglichkeiten abhängig.
Neben dem Fluginformationsdienst (FIS) (Flight Information Service) wird auch eine Flugberatung angeboten. Beides steht im kontrollierten wie unkontrollierten Luftraum für Flüge nach Sichtflug- (VFR) wie für Flüge nach Instrumentenflug-Regeln (IFR) zur Verfügung.
Der primäre Unterschied zwischen dem Fluginformationsdienst und der Flugberatung ist: Der Flugberatungsdienst (AIS - Aeronautical Information Service) steht vor dem Flug zur Verfügung, der Fluginformationsdienst (FIS) während des Fluges.
Der Fluginformationsdienst wird in Deutschland von der DFS erbracht.
