FLIR (von engl. forward looking infrared, etwa „vorwärts schauendes Infrarotgerät“) beschreibt in der Luftfahrt ein bildgebendes Verfahren, mit dem Infrarotstrahlung in Richtung der Fahrzeug- oder Flugkörperachse wahrgenommen, ausgewertet und gegebenenfalls für die Besatzung aufbereitet werden kann.
FLIR wird häufig zusammen mit Waffensystemen bei Tiefangriffsflugzeugen und Panzerabwehrhubschraubern eingesetzt, um unter allen Sichtbedingungen einsatzfähig zu sein sowie Wärmequellen zu entdecken.
Viele Polizeihubschrauber sind ebenfalls mit FLIR bestückt. Die Transporthelikopter der Schweizer Armee (SA 332 Super Puma/Cougar) sind ebenfalls mit FLIR ausgestattet und nehmen auch an zivilen SAR Missionen teil, wie der Suche nach Lawinenopfern und vermissten Personen, wobei schon einige Erfolge erzielt wurden.
Selbst zielsuchende Raketen besitzen Infrarot-Bildsensoren und eine Bildauswertung, um das fliegende Ziel von Täuschkörpern (Flares) zu unterscheiden.
Des Weiteren gibt es folgende Verfahren:
- SLIR = Sideways Looking Infrared (zur Seite sehend)
- DLIR = Downward Looking Infrared (nach unten sehend)
