Garissa ist die Hauptstadt der Provinz North-Eastern im ostafrikanischen Staat Kenia und gleichzeitig Verwaltungssitz des Garissa Districts. Sie liegt im Bereich der großen Ebenen des kenianischen Ostens am Fluss Tana, etwa 40  Kilometer südlich des Äquators.

Bevölkerung

Die Stadt hatte bei der letzten Volkszählung (1999) 50.955 Einwohner, allerdings dürfte die Zahl inzwischen bereits höher liegen, da Garissa – in den 1970er Jahren noch eine Kleinstadt – rasant wächst. Für 2007 wurde die Bevölkerung auf 73.900 geschätzt.[1] Wichtigste Bevölkerungsgruppe in Garissa sind die Somali, hauptsächlich vom Clan der Ogadeni-Darod.
