Das Halligan-Tool ist eine besondere Bauform einer Brechstange. Angefügt an eine Stahlstange mit rundem oder sechskantigen Querschnitt sind auf der einen Seite zwei Werkzeugklingen im Winkel von 90° zum Stiel und 90° zueinander, auf der anderen Seite eine Klinge in einem Winkel von etwa 30° zum Stiel oder gerade in der Stielflucht.

Durch diese Anordnung kann jede der Klingen mit einem geeigneten Schlagwerkzeug (in Deutschland wird häufig ein Spalthammer aber auch Äxte, Vorschlaghammer oder ein TNT-Tool verwendet) eingeschlagen und dadurch für nachfolgende Hebelanwendungen ausreichend fest verankert werden.

Klingenformen

Die erste 90°-Klinge ist keilförmig ausgebildet. Sie kann z. B. in enge Spalten geschlagen werden, um diese durch die Flankenkräfte des Keils aufzuweiten.

Die zweite 90°-Klinge ist hakenförmig mit einem spitz zulaufenden Runddorn. Sie wird üblicherweise verwendet, um Löcher in dünnen Blechen und weichen Baustoffen zu schaffen.

Die 30°-Klinge hat die bekannte Nageleisen-Form (Kuhfuß, Geißfuß). Alternativ zur 30°-Klinge ist auch eine Ausführung mit einer Blechschneidklaue erhältlich, diese ist allerdings wenig verbreitet.

Namensgebung

Die richtige Bezeichnung Halligan-Tool geht auf den Namen des Erfinders Hugh Halligan zurück. Im Rahmen des Namensschutzes von Produkten sind allerdings auch eine Vielzahl von anderen Bezeichnungen bekannt bzw. üblich: Hooligan-Tool, Haligan-Tool, Pro-Bar, Hallagan bar etc..

Ausführungen

Dementsprechend unterscheiden sich die Produkte auch durch Länge (etwa 500 bis 1500 mm), Material (Stahl, Aluminium, nicht-zündfunkenreißende Legierungen, elektrisch nicht leitfähige Materialien) die Verbindungen (geschrumpft, gesplintet, aus einem Stück geschmiedet) und die Gestaltung der Klingen im Detail.

Zusammen mit einem Spannriemen kann mit einem Spalthammer oder anderen Schlagwerkzeug ein Paket gebildet werden, um beide Werkzeuge mit einem Griff entnehmen und mit einer Hand tragen zu können.
