Haskell Indian Nation University ist eine staatliche amerikanische Universität in Lawrence, im Bundesstaat Kansas, die nur für Mitglieder von staatlich anerkannten Indianerstämmen zugänglich ist. Die Hochschule wurde nach Dudley C. Haskell benannt, der einmal Vorsitzender des Committee on Indian Affairs im US-Repräsentantenhaus war.
Geschichte
Die Institution wurde 1884 als Internat für Indianerkinder gegründet, die von ihrer Kultur entwöhnt werden sollten. Die Kinder wurden meist ihren Familien weggenommen und durften im Internat weder ihre Muttersprachen sprechen noch traditionelle Kleidung tragen. Ähnliche Institutionen existierten auch in anderen Städten, z. B. die Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania.[1] Das Internat hörte im Laufe der Zeit auf, Schüler gewaltsam zu rekrutieren und umzuerziehen, und erweiterte mit den Jahren sein Bildungsangebot. Seit 1970 wurde Haskell ein Junior College, das Vorbereitungskurse für Universitätsstudien anbot. Haskell wandelte sich dann selbst zur Universität und wurde 1993 in Haskell Indian Nation University umbenannt. Die Hochschule bietet Bachelor-Abschlüsse an.[2]
Studium und Studierende
Die Haskell Indian Nation University hat im Schnitt 1000 Studierende.[3] Im Jahre 1996 waren Studierende von 160 Indianerstämmen aus 36 Bundesstaaten an der Hochschule vertreten.[4]
