Immanuel stammt aus dem Hebräischen. Immanu'el (עמנואל „mit uns ist Gott“ oder „mit uns sei Gott“). El ist der Singular des Wortes Elohim.

Die lateinisch-griechische Form des männlichen Vornamens lautet Emanuel.

Der Name Immanuel kommt nur vier Mal in der Bibel vor, dreimal im Buch Jesaja und einmal im Matthäus-Evangelium. Matthäus bezieht die Stelle Jesaja 7,14 auf Jesus und macht deutlich, dass dies die Ankündigung seiner Geburt ist. Ansonsten wird Jesus aber zu keinem Zeitpunkt Immanuel genannt.


Jesaja 7,14: »Darum wird euch der HERR selbst ein Zeichen geben: Siehe, eine junge Frau ist schwanger und wird einen Sohn gebären, den wird sie nennen Immanuel.«

Jesaja 8,8: »Und sie werden einbrechen in Juda und wegschwemmen und überfluten, bis sie an den Hals reichen. Und sie werden ihre Flügel ausbreiten, daß sie dein Land, o Immanuel, füllen, so weit es ist.«

Jesaja 8,10: »Beschließt einen Rat und es werde nichts daraus; beredet euch und es geschehe nicht! Denn hier ist Immanuel!«

Matthäus 1,23: »Siehe, eine Jungfrau wird schwanger sein und einen Sohn gebären, und sie werden ihm den Namen Immanuel geben, das heißt übersetzt: Gott mit uns.«
