Der IMViC-Test ist ein mikrobiologisches Verfahren um Escherichia coli von anderen Enterobacteriaceen zu unterscheiden. Hierbei steht

Das Verfahren kommt vor allem bei Trinkwasseranalysen zur Anwendung, da Escherichia coli ein Fäkalindikator ist, aber von anderen Enterobacteriaceen differenziert werden muss. Mikrobiologische Unternehmen haben Teststäbchen entwickelt, die alle vier IMViC-Tests beinhalten und selbst von ungeschultem Personal durchgeführt werden können. Nach der Inokulation und anschließenden Inkubation muss lediglich die Verfärbung von den einzelnen Testfeldern abgelesen werden.

Zur Differenzierung zwischen E. coli und Enterobacter aerogenes gilt das Schema in der Tabelle.
