Amethystpython

Der Amethystpython früher (Morelia amethistina) wurde im Jahr 2000 in fünf Arten aufgeteilt:

• Morelia amethistina (Neuguinea-Amethystpython)
• Morelia clastolepis
• Morelia kinghorni (Australischer Amethystpython)
• Morelia nauta
• Morelia tracyae

Mit dem wissenschaftlichen Namen Morelia amethistina wird heute nur noch der Neuguinea-Amethystpython bezeichnet. Innerhalb der Gattung Rautenpythons (Morelia) sind die fünf Amethystpythonarten untereinander am nächsten verwandt. Es wird sogar diskutiert, sie als eigenständige Gattung mit Namen Australiasis abzutrennen.
