John Winthrop

John Winthrop (* 12. Januar 1588 in Edwardstone, Suffolk, England; † 26. März 1649 in Boston, Massachusetts) war ein englischer Puritaner. 1629 wurde er zum ersten Gouverneur der Massachusetts Bay Colony gewählt und erreichte diese im April 1630 mit einer Flotte von elf Schiffen und rund 700 Siedlern. Bis zu seinem Tode 1649 wurde er mit wenigen Ausnahmen alljährlich als Gouverneur der Kolonie wiedergewählt und prägte in dieser Zeit die politische Entwicklung der Kolonie entscheidend mit.

In seiner Predigt A Model of Christian Charity von 1630 prägte Winthrop den Ausdruck City upon a Hill.
