Jötunn (an. iötunn, ahd. enz, aeng. eoton, dä. jætte, sv. jätte) ist eine Bezeichnung für Riesen in der altnordischen Mythologie. Der Name leitet sich von dem verb essen (ahd. ezzan) ab, womit sich der Name als die Gefräßigen übersetzen ließe. Die Bezeichnung wird sowohl für weibliche als auch für männliche Riesen verwendet. Für die Mehrzahl findet sich im Deutschen auch die Schreibweise Joten [1][2].

Die Jötunen wohnen in Jötunheim, das jenseits der von Menschen bewohnten Erde liegt. Der Herr dieses Reiches, das mit dem Totenreich zusammenfällt, ist Utgardloki.

Sie sind die Nachkommen des Urriesen Ymir und lebten bereits vor der Geburt der Götter.

Den Asen und Menschen gegenüber sind sie teils (wie zum Beispiel Ägir und Mimir) freundlich gesinnt. Andere Jötunen sind den Asen (und Menschen) feindlich gesinnt (Thursen, vgl. Rune þurisaz). Thor bekämpft sie deshalb ständig. Dieser Kampf wird bis zu Ragnarök anhalten.
