Kama Sutra Records wurde 1965 gegründet. Das Label ging aus Kama Sutra Productions, die von Arthur Ripp, Hy Mizrahi und Phil Steinberg 1964 zusammen ins Leben gerufen wurde, hervor.

Aufgrund von Vertragsproblemen mit dem damaligen Vertriebspartner MGM Records gründete das Management 1967 Buddah Records und stellte 1976 die Veröffentlichungen auf Kama Sutra ein. Nach der Neugründung 1982 trat es als Sutra Records wieder in Erscheinung und gehört heute zu Sony BMG Music Entertainment.

Unter dem Label erschienen Werke von u.a. Brewer & Shipley, Charlie Daniels Band, Exuma, The Flamin Groovies, Gunhill Road, The Innocense, The Jaguars, The Lovin’ Spoonful, NRBQ, Ocean, Sha Na Na, Sopwith Camel, Stories und Trade Winds.
