Kolwezi ist eine Stadt in der Demokratischen Republik Kongo. Die Stadt hat 451.168 Einwohner und ist die Hauptstadt der Provinz Lualaba.[1]

Die jüngste Geschichte Kolwezis ist von Armut geprägt. Die Cholera suchte die Stadt heim. Die politische Lage ist unsicher, viele Menschen mussten fliehen, darunter auch Europäer.

Es gibt bedeutende Cobalt- und Kupferminen. Sie sind teilweise in ausländischer Hand. In der Nähe von Kolwezi liegt die Stromrichterstation der HGÜ Inga-Shaba. Ebenso liegen in der Nähe der Stadt Uranvorkommen.

Kolwezi ist Sitz des Bistums Kolwezi.
