Kydex

Kydex ist der Markenname einer Produktlinie thermoplastischer Kunststoffe. Das Acryl/PVC-Polyblend wurde 1965 von Röhm & Haas entwickelt, seit 1987 liegen die Rechte bei der US-amerikanischen Kleerdex Company. Das Material zeichnet sich durch hohe Festigkeit und Härte (über 90 HRR) sowie gute chemische und Feuerbeständigkeit aus.

Kydex wird hauptsächlich alternativ zu Leder bei der Produktion von Holstern für Schusswaffen und als Scheidenmaterial für Messer verwendet. Darüber hinaus kommt Kydex u. a. beim Fahrzeug- und Flugzeugbau oder bei der Verpackungs- und Gehäuseherstellung zum Einsatz. Kydexplatten sind in verschiedenen Farben, Stärken und Oberflächenstrukturen erhältlich.

Nach langsamer Erwärmung auf etwa 160–200 °C im Ofen oder mit dem Heißluftfön werden die Platten in Form gepresst. Nach Abkühlung können die Kanten geschliffen und poliert werden, auch weitere Verarbeitung wie Lamination oder Schweißen ist möglich.
