Der internationale Flughafen Lefkosia ist ein seit 1974 ungenutzer Flughafen auf Zypern in der UN-Schutzzone.

Geschichte

Das Flugfeld Lefkosia wurde von der Royal Air Force seit den 1930er Jahren genutzt. Am 24. September 1947 nahm Cyprus Airways von diesem den Linienverkehr auf. 1968 wurde ein neues Hauptgebäude eröffnet.

Während des Zypernkonflikts zerstörten die türkischen Luftstreitkräfte zwei der aus drei Trident-Jets bestehende Flotte von Cyprus Airways, kurze Zeit später lag der Flughafen zwischen den Fronten im Zypernkonflikt und die UN erklärte diesen zur UN-Schutzzone. Seither ist der Flughafen geschlossen.

Mehrere Gespräche, den Flughafen wieder für den zivilen Luftverkehr zu öffnen, scheiterten bisher. Seine Rolle als internationaler Flughafen der Insel übernahm der Flughafen von Larnaca, Flüge über die Türkei werden vom Flughafen Ercan aus angeboten.
