Lester Willis Young, genannt „Prez“ oder „Pres“ (* 27. August 1909, Woodville, Mississippi; † 15. März 1959, New York City) war ein US-amerikanischer Tenorsaxophonist und Klarinettist. Lester Young war einer der einflussreichen Saxophonisten des Jazz. Seine Spielweise markiert den Punkt des Übergangs vom Swing zum Bebop. Charakteristisch waren – ganz im Gegensatz zum kraftvollen Sound von Coleman Hawkins – sein schlanker, heller Ton und sein elegantes Spiel. Einen hörbaren Einfluss auf das Spiel von Lester Young hatte Frankie Trumbauer.[Morton/Cook 1] Gemeinsam mit dem Gitarristen Charlie Christian und dem Bassisten Jimmy Blanton, war er eine der Schlüsselfiguren des Jazz in den frühen 1940er Jahren.
