Der Limbo ist ein Tanz, der seinen Ursprung auf den Westindischen Inseln hat. Er wurde traditionell eine Woche nach einem Begräbnis getanzt. Eine Worterklärung geht vom jamaikanischen Englisch aus: limbo für Englisch limber „biegsam, geschmeidig“.[1][2]

Historische Wurzeln könnten in der Erinnerung an die Überfahrt in den sehr flachen Laderäumen der Schiffe für den Sklaventransport liegen.[3] Der Limbo ist beliebter Spaßtanz und Partyelement auf der ganzen Welt. Ziel des Tanzes ist es, zu karibischen Rhythmen und mit nach hinten gebeugtem Rücken unter einer waagrechten Stange durchzutanzen, ohne diese zu berühren. Um die Schwierigkeit zu erhöhen, wird die Stange nach und nach immer tiefer angebracht oder gehalten. Den Weltrekord mit 16,5 cm hält seit 1987 Marlene Simons.
