MacDermot

Galt MacDermot (* 18. Dezember 1928 in Montreal) ist ein kanadischer Komponist.

Als Kind erhielt er eine umfassende musikalische Ausbildung (Blockflöte, Violine, Klavier). Anfang der 1950er Jahre studierte er am College of Music in Cape Town, Südafrika, wo er vor allem rhythmisch dazulernte; er bezeichnet später diese Phase als eine seiner wichtigsten. Danach arbeitete er in seiner Heimatstadt zunächst als Organist und Kirchenmusiker, dann als Komponist von Rock- und Jazz-Songs, später als Barpianist in New York.

Für sein Stück "African Waltz" bekam er einen Grammy Award. Weiterhin komponierte er Filmmusik und mehrere Musicals, von denen Hair das bekannteste wurde.

Im Jahr 2006 veröffentlichte der Hip Hop Produzent "Oh No" auf dem hoch angesehenen Label Stones Throw das Album "Exodus into unheard rhythms", welches auf der Musik von Galt MacDermot basiert.
