Madison Washington

Madison Washington war 1841 der Anstifter einer Sklavenrevolte auf dem Schiff Creole. Das Sklavenschiff transportierte den Schiffskoch Washington, zusammen mit 134 anderen Sklaven, von Virginia nach New Orleans. Washington stachelte 18 seiner Mitgefangenen zu einer Rebellion an. Sie übernahmen die Kontrolle über die Creole und segelten zu der britisch kontrollierten Insel Nassau. Trotz amerikanischen Protests schickten die Briten die Sklaven nicht zurück, sondern machten sie zu freien Männern. Trotzdem sperrten sie Washington und seine 18 Komplizen wegen Meuterei einige Monate ein.

Madison Washington war der Namensgeber für den Held in Frederick Douglass’ Roman, The Heroic Slave.
