Masterton

Masterton ist eine Stadt im Süden der Nordinsel Neuseelands. Sie ist Hauptstadt und Verwaltungssitz des Masterton-Distriktes (engl.: Masterton District Council), der sich in der Region Wellington befindet.

Geschichte

Masterton wurde am 19. Mai 1854 von Joseph Masters gegründet, nach dem der Ort auch benannt ist.

Die Bezeichnung "Stadt" für Masterton ist so eigentlich falsch, da die minimale Bevölkerungsanzahl für eine Stadt in Neuseeland 1989 von den damals in Masterton fast erreichten 20.000 Einwohnern auf mindestens 50.000 Einwohner angehoben wurde.
