Mongoloid“ bzw. „Mongolismus“ ist ein veralteter Begriff für Träger des Down-Syndroms, der aufgrund des diskriminierenden bis beleidigenden Beiklangs nicht benutzt werden sollte. John Langdon-Down gab 1862 der von ihm zuerst beschriebenen und später nach ihm benannten Genommutation den Namen „Mongolian Idiocy“, welcher von anderen Sprachgemeinschaften übernommen wurde. „Mongoloid“ ergab sich aus gewissen physischen Ähnlichkeiten der Träger des Syndroms mit Mitgliedern der mongolischen Bevölkerung. „Idiot“ war seinerzeit in der Medizin und Psychologie ein Fachbegriff für Personen mit einem IQ unter 20. Nachdem 1961 die renommierte britische Wissenschaftszeitschrift „The Lancet“ auf die Bitte einer internationalen Gruppe von 19 anerkannten Genetikern die Bezeichnung in „Down's Syndrome“ abgeändert hatte, zog 1965 die Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) auf Antrag ihres mongolischen Delegierten nach und eliminierte den Begriff „Mongolian Idiocy“ aus ihrem Vokabular. Heute übliche Bezeichnungen sind „Down-Syndrom“ und „Trisomie 21“.
