Morgellons

Morgellons (auch Morgellons-Krankheit) ist die Bezeichnung für ein Krankheitskonzept, das kontrovers diskutiert wird. Der Begriff wurde erstmals im 17. Jahrhundert in einem Werk des englischen Arztes Sir Thomas Browne erwähnt, fand aber erst seit 2002 vor allem im englischen Sprachraum weite Verbreitung, nachdem die Mutter eines betroffenen Kindes den Begriff wiederentdeckte und mit der Gründung der Morgellon Research Foundation propagierte. Die wissenschaftliche Medizin sieht das Syndrom mehrheitlich nicht als eigenständiges Krankheitsbild, sondern als Variante des Dermatozoenwahns an, einer psychiatrischen Erkrankung. Die Verbreitung wird auf ein Internet- und Medien-Phänomen („Internet-Mem“) zurückgeführt.[1][2][3]

Die Verfechter eines eigenständigen Krankheitsbildes postulieren die Bildung von „Fasern“ oder „Filamenten“ in der Haut. Als Spektrum der Symptome werden Hautläsionen, Bewegungsphänomene in der Haut, Beschwerden des Bewegungsapparates, Leistungseinschränkungen sowie kognitive und emotionale Störungen angegeben. Die Pathophysiologie wird oft als „unspezifisch“ bezeichnet, zuweilen werden als Ursachen auch infektiöse Erreger wie die Bakterien Agrobacterium tumefaciens und Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, der Pilz Cryptococcus neoformans oder der Parasit Strongyloides stercoralis vermutet.[2][4] Bei der Untersuchung von Hautproben bei Betroffenen lassen sich jedoch keine dieser Erreger oder sonstige Fremdkörper feststellen.[5]
