Montréal Canadiens• NHL | American Hockey League ↓ Die NHL-Saison 1977/78 war die 61. Spielzeit in der National Hockey League. 18 Teams spielten jeweils 80 Spiele. Den Stanley Cup gewannen die Montreal Canadiens nach einem 4:2-Erfolg in der Finalserie gegen die Boston Bruins. Angeführt wurden die Canadiens von Guy Lafleur, der zum dritten Mal in Folge Topscorer wurde. Im Draft waren die New York Islanders sehr erfolgreich. Mit dem 15. Pick holten sie Mike Bossy, der mit 53 Toren und 91 Punkten für Furore sorgte. Zusammen mit Denis Potvin, der in dieser Saison seine zweite James Norris Memorial Trophy gewann, wuchs bei den Islanders Großes heran. Um auch den Stürmern ihre Ehre zuteil werden lassen, die nicht nur auf Torejagd gingen, sondern nach hinten absicherten, ehrte die Liga den besten defensiven Stürmer mit der Frank J. Selke Trophy. Erster Gewinner wurde Montreals Bob Gainey. Nach 31 Jahren übergab NHL-Präsident Clarence Campbell die Leitung der Liga an John Ziegler, den ersten amerikanischen NHL-Präsidenten.
