Verwaltungssitz ist die Stadt Wallsend. Weitere bedeutende Orte im Bezirk sind Cullercoats, Forest Hall, Killingworth, North Shields, Tynemouth und Whitley Bay. Es besteht eine Städtepartnerschaft mit Mönchengladbach in Deutschland.
Die Reorganisation der Grenzen und der Kompetenzen der lokalen Behörden führte 1974 zur Bildung des Metropolitan Borough. Fusioniert wurden dabei der County Borough Tynemouth, der Borough Wallsend, ein Teil des Borough Whitley Bay, der Urban District Longbenton und ein Teil des Urban District Seaton Valley. Diese Gebietskörperschaften gehörten zuvor zur Grafschaft Northumberland.
1986 wurde North Tyneside faktisch eine Unitary Authority, als die Zentralregierung die übergeordnete Verwaltung der Grafschaft auflöste. North Tyneside blieb für zeremonielle Zwecke Teil von Tyne and Wear, wie auch für einzelne übergeordnete Aufgaben wie Feuerwehr und öffentlicher Verkehr.
