Operation Solomon

Operation Salomon war eine israelische Militäroperation mit dem Ziel, äthiopischen Juden die Auswanderung nach Israel (Alija) zu ermöglichen.

1991 stand das Mengistu-Regime in Äthiopien aufgrund von Aktionen eritreischer Militärs und interner militanter umsturzorientierter Organisationen kurz vor dem Zusammenbruch. Israel sah dadurch die Sicherheit der vergleichsweise großen äthiopischen jüdischen Gemeinde bedroht. Gleichzeitig eröffnete sich erst durch die schwindende Macht des Regimes die Möglichkeit, die Operation durchzuführen. Aus diesem Grund wurde bereits 1990, als die Schwächen des Mengistu-Regimes offensichtlich wurden, Pläne für einen Lufttransport aller auswanderungswilligen Juden nach Israel vorbereitet.

Plangemäß flogen binnen 36 Stunden 34 C-130 der Israelischen Luftstreitkräfte 14.325 äthiopische Juden nach Israel. Daneben wurden zivile Flugzeuge der El Al eingesetzt, die dabei einen bislang ungebrochenen Weltrekord aufstellten: eine Boeing 747 transportierte auf einem Flug 1.122 Passagiere (das Doppelte der normalen Kapazität).
